FAQs

  • What is a CIC?

Wanderers of the Wild is a Community Interest Company (CIC). This means we are a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to using our profits and assets to benefit the community—specifically, by funding accessible outdoor education.

  • Where does my money go?

As a CIC, we are fully transparent. All funds from classes and merchandise go directly back into the organization to cover operational costs, maintain safety equipment, and fund subsidised places for families who need them.

  • Are you insured and DBS checked?

Yes. The primary session leader is a fully qualified Primary School Teacher with relevant professional qualifications and public liability insurance. All staff and regular volunteers are enhanced DBS checked.

  • How do I book onto a term?

All bookings are made through our Sessions & Classes Shop on this website. You can select your session (Discovery, Deep Dive, or Pioneers) and pay to secure your spot.

  • Do you offer single-session bookings?

Yes, in the sessions & classes shop you can book just one session. Please let us know when you make the booking which date you’d like to attend.

  • Do you offer taster sessions?

Yes! All new families are offered one free taster session to see if you and your little learners like our sessions.

  • Do parents stay or drop-off?

Our home educators sessions are designed to be family learning where parents can get involved in the fun. This allows all children to access these sessions, especially children with anxiety. Drop-off could be arrange prior but must have written agreement with the leader.

  • What happens if there is bad weather?

We run sessions year-round and believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate gear! We have tarps and shelters on-site for heavy rain. Sessions are only cancelled in cases of extreme, dangerous weather (e.g., high winds, lightning, severe ice).

  • What should we wear?

Participants must wear waterproof clothing, and sturdy, waterproof footwear (e.g., wellies or walking boots). Layers are essential, as is a warm hat and gloves, even in mild weather as we are near the top of the hill. We have areas that are sheltered from winds, but best be prepared!

  • Are sessions risk assessed?

Yes. We conduct thorough Generic Risk Assessments for all activities (tools, fire, walking) and a specific Site-Specific Risk Assessment for the learning location before every term. These are reviewed daily via a Dynamic Risk Assessment.

  • Are sessions just play sessions, or are they actually learning?

It is both! Our sessions are designed and led by a qualified Primary School Teacher, ensuring every activity is linked to key learning outcomes (e.g., our curriculum, John Muir Award challenges) while fostering child-led, joyful exploration.

  • How do you cater learners with SEND?

Our primary leader has specialist experience in SEND education. We use an inclusive, multi-sensory approach and keep group sizes small. Please discuss your child's specific needs with us before booking so we can plan the necessary support. We do our best to not turn children away, but to adapt to include them.

  • What is the John Muir Trust Award?

This award is the main goal of our Pioneers group. It's a national environmental award encouraging people to discover, explore, conserve, and share wild places. It's a brilliant achievement for building skills and CVs!
